Social Engineering:-
Well there is lot to explain about this but iam just providing a brief info. A person may be your co-worker or neighbour who is an attcker wants to extarct information from you. Some how he will get your bank account details gathers your personal information like date of birth, address, job title etc etc .He can now use these details for retriving your password through phone banking or some thing else right ??
Even If one knows about all your personal information then he can simply click on forgot password tab in the e-mail website like yahoo gmail etc and can reset your password .
Or the attcker may call you pretending that he is your banker or your office systems administartor or something else to extract information from you
So what i want to say is keep the security questions (the option given in any password protected websites like banks e-mails etc) a logic less answer so that atleast it cannot be guessed by any one .and where ever possible give some fake details.
Dumpster diving :-
This is one of the cheap stupid but very dangorous activity, In the above example we said that the attcker had some how collected your personal information right?
Do you think how ??
You have just thrown your atm transaction slip in dustbin with out destroying it and now the attacker come to your hose at night time and search the dustbin to get the slip .Now he is well informed with your account number your balance etc . Hey dont laugh coz this is a common hacking technique, Your telephone bills, photo copies of certificates , hall tickets, electricity bills all shall reveal at least some information to the attacker.
